FAQ
Is the seafood handled separately from all fruits and vegetables?
Yes! The fish arrives at our facility flash-frozen and vacuum-sealed in plastic, and further wrapped in butcher paper (so it shouldn’t be exposed!). It will be handled like any allergen at our facility set away from produce and handled separately. This means team members who handle the fish packages will not be handling any other items while packing boxes.
Should I be concerned about fish leaking on my veggies? How does the packaging prevent this?
The packaging is vacuum-sealed plastic, then finished and wrapped in butcher paper to maximize freshness and minimize leaking, punctures, or any other damage that would affect the quality of your fish.
How should I store the fish upon receipt, and how is it packed to ensure freshness?
Fish arrives at the warehouse directly from the distributor fully frozen and is immediately placed in frozen storage at 3℉. When it goes into your box, it’s placed next to the ice pack. If it arrives frozen, store it frozen for up to two months. While it can be frozen for longer we recommend consuming it within 2 months for the best taste and texture. If it arrives thawed or thawing, store it in the fridge immediately upon receipt and use it within 5 days.
What is ‘sustainable’ fish?
Sustainable fishing aims to combat many of the issues plaguing the fishing industry - overfishing, species depletion, pollution, and unsafe catch methods. By using U.S.-regulated wild-caught fisheries, species can be tracked and monitored to ensure that they’re not being overfished or disproportionately affected by human intervention!
Sea2Table partners with U.S.-based fisheries regulated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which are among the world’s most sustainable. NOAA assesses, monitors, and projects the status of fish stocks, sets catch limits, and ensures compliance with fisheries regulations all while reducing bycatch. NOAA’s work is guided by two core mandates—to ensure the productivity and sustainability of fisheries and fishing communities through science-based decision-making and compliance with regulations and to recover and conserve protected resources including whales, turtles, and salmon.
Additionally, Sea2Table has been a proud Certified B Corporation since its founding! B Corporations are companies that use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems (Hungry Harvest is pursuing this certification too!). Certified B Corporations meet higher standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.
Is this going to be a regular Marketplace feature?
We’re going to try to include this during the cooler months as an add-on option.
Why does this cost more than the fish in my local grocery store?`
The vast majority of seafood sold in the United States is imported from overseas or often comes from poorly regulated industrial farms. This keeps prices low but has a high environmental impact. The seafood we are offering is wild-caught from well-managed U.S. fisheries. This more sustainable supply chain requires additional costs and impacts the price accordingly.
Why is HH offering fish?
First, don’t worry - we’re not putting fish over produce! Produce and plant-based products will always be our first priority! In an effort to simplify your shopping experience and make it easier to use all the food waste-fighting produce in your box, we decided to introduce seafood to our Marketplace offerings as an additional protein option. We didn’t make this decision lightly. We agreed we would only bring animal protein to our shopping experience if we could find a transparent, accountable, and environmentally sustainable solution. We found that in our seafood partner Sea2Table and are excited to bring some of their wild-caught, U.S.-based fish to our Marketplace!
Can we buy directly from Sea2Table?
You’re absolutely able to subscribe to Sea2Table! We wanted to provide a small selection of their items so that you can conveniently order a small amount of fish alongside your normal produce selection to have delivered with your harvest.
Feel free to check out their website! Sea2Table
Why not partner with additional plant-based companies?
We are! We’re always talking with companies that need to reduce waste. More to come later, so keep an eye out for updates and new items on the marketplace.
Are you currently offering and are there plans to expand fish offerings in the future?
We will be offering cod and salmon! We may expand our seafood offerings in the future, but don’t have a timeline for that at the moment.
Do you have any recipe recommendations?
Keep an eye on our Instagram! We’ll be posting some recipe suggestions there.
What makes us different from Misfits/Imperfect now that we offer meat products?
Great question. First, to clarify, we have no plans to offer meat products like beef, pork, chicken, etc. in the near future, just fish! We're trying to curate this through thoughtful partnerships to ensure that our source material is sustainable, rather than encouraging buying of products that are simply rounding out a shopping list. We feel this is different from other companies like Misfits because it will encourage our customers to think carefully about the sustainability aspect of meat consumption - such as: is it benefitting the oceanic ecosystem? is it caught in a method sustainable for other ocean species?
We also want to make sure that we're not making meat a 'focus' item - as opposed to other companies that promote it at the same volume as plant-based. Hungry Harvest's first and foremost mission is to keep plant-based products (produce and grocery!) from going to waste. Offering fish won't change that - and we hope that it will lead to even more creative ways to use and rescue plants to make a well-rounded meal!
